boatsAnd from the same front, more worrisome reports are coming in for the state as a survey revealed that around 10,000 boats, mostly belonging to fishermen, have gone missing from the coast along Ratnagiri district in the last eight years. This was revealed when the government undertook a survey to review safety and security of the state’s vast coastline after the recent terror attack on Mumbai. The survey also shows that only a small percentage of the boats registered by the fisheries department in the last few years are operating in the state. The police have now begun investigations to find out the whereabouts of the boats and trace the owners. The total number of missing boats across the state could be much more. The figure of the missing boats was arrived at after the coast and fisheries department realised that only 2,000 of the registered 12,000 boats were in operation in Ratnagiri. Bureau report NMTV
