3 BMC HOSPS TO GET MRI MACHINES

BMC would be soon purchasing MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for three major teaching hospitals of the city, KEM, Sion and Nair hospitals. The move is likely to put an end to the controversy surrounding the outsourcing of essential radiology services. Earlier patients had no option but get scan done at private diagnostic clinics or undergo long waits at the sole civic set-up. While an MRI scan in public hospitals costs Rs 2,500, private clinics charge thrice the sum. The proposal was mired in several controversies when BMC decided to hand over the purchase and run of the MRIs to a private trust. While Sion Hospital, which is known for its trauma services, is pegged to get a three-tesla machine worth Rs 11 crore, the Nair Hospital will get a 1.5 tesla machine.
