Statistics show that three lakh children in India are born with life threatening heart defects, 99 percent of which require operation. According to Dr. Suresh Joshi – a leading city cardiac surgeon there are a staggering three lakh children in India that are diagnosed with life threatening heart defects. 99 percent of these heart defects require operation for the survival of the child. It maybe recalled that recently we had aired a news on how Disha, the baby diagnosed with Pulmonary Atresia, a heart defect, was saved as the doctors and her parents knew her complication before she was born and were prepared. It is very important that such defects in a new born is identified while in the mother’s womb itself so that the ailment can be addressed immediately. Mothers also have to be very cautious in the first three months of their pregnancy as this is the time when the heart ailment can develop due to various reasons like genetically, consumption of incorrect drugs, viral fever or lack of nutrition. Every step and care should be taken by mothers to nurture the child within so that he or she can live a normal and fulfilled life. With cameraperson Abhay Prasad, Sana Warsia for NMTV News.
