46 OF 62 LIFT INSPECTOR POSTS ARE VACANT SAYS GOVT

The state government admitted that 46 of the 62 posts of lift inspectors-whose job is to inspect 80,000 lifts in government buildings across the state-have been lying vacant for several months. The government’s admission comes in the wake of spurt in lift mishaps. Recently, a six year-old girl died after she got stuck between the door and a gate of the lift at her Dharavi building. The building was part of the government’s SRA project. Reminding members of the state Legislative Council of the ghastly incident, MLC Ramnath Mote sought to know what steps were being taken by the government to ensure the safety of residents using lifts in government colonies. Following the incident, the government had made it mandatory for lift inspectors to check all lifts in government buildings twice a year. A few days ago, the state government, following a discussion on lifts, decided to make it mandatory for private builders in SRA and Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (Mhada) projects to undertake lift maintenance for the first 10 years.
