The 49th Maharashtra Foundation Day was observed on Friday by paying homage to 105 martyrs who laid down their lives for ‘Samyukta (United) Maharashtra’. On the Golden Jubilee Year of the creation of Maharashtra, in an official programme held at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, Governor S C Jamir greeted citizens and unfurled the National Flag to mark the celebrations. He inspected the ceremonial parade and delivered the Maharashtra Day message to the people on this occasion. In his speech he stated that over the past five decades, Maharashtra has emerged as a leading state in terms of socio-economic progress and development with several public-oriented schemes and programmes for the welfare of the poorest of the poor. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray paid tributes to martyrs of ‘Samyukta Maharashtra’ at Hutatma Chowk with his party workers. At TMC Headquarters, the flag was hoisted by TMC Mayor Smita Indulkar. A parade was also held. On the other hand, Thane Excise and Environment Minister Ganesh Naik unfurled the flag at Dadaji Kondev stadium in Thane and expressed his gratitude towards the nation. A ceremonial parade was also inspected by him and later felicitated policemen by giving them medals for good work.
