63 SENSITIVE BOOTHS, 169 AT RISK OF VIOLENCE AS MUMBAI AND THANE ALL SET FOR POLLING DAY

polling-security-2As Mumbai and Thane go to polls, the police have identified 169 of the 8,316 polling centres as vulnerable to violence, of which 63 have been identified as ‘sensitive’. These sensitive polling centres will be provided with additional security measures, including Paramilitary forces. According to the information form the police force, several of the sensitive polling booths polling booths are concentrated in the suburbs. In fact, the central region tops the table with 54 such polling booths, while south region is at the bottom with 14. The police are conducting nakabandis and mohalla committee meetings at all vulnerable locations, especially at the 63 critical polling centres, to develop a sense of confidence among voters. According to State Director General of Police Suprakash Chakravarty, around 95 lakh registered voters will cast their vote in Mumbai for the six constituencies, while 36 lakh voters will cast their votes in Thane police commissionerate for three constituencies. Law enforcement personnel have been deployed in large numbers to ensure peaceful polls. Commando forces, along with officials from ATS and Crime Branch will be deployed. On an average, one police patrolling van will handle three polling sites, while one beat marshal will patrol four polling sites on voting day. Assault vehicles and Commando forces will also be deployed. CRPF and SRPF companies will also be located at strategic points all over the city. In addition, officials at the critical polling centres will photograph every voter at the booth. Police have already zeroed in on around 499 anti-social elements staying in these critical areas, and detained them as a precautionary measure. Several others have been stringently warned.
