As per the Twitter handle of the police department, nearly 70% of the complaints received are on traffic violations. In the last three months, the department received 1,750 complaints through Twitter. Around 1225 of these complaints were related to traffic problems.
Since its launch on December 28, 2015, the @MumbaiPolice Twitter handle has more than one lakh followers, but only 12 of the 1,750 complaints have been converted into FIRs.
“People are using this platform hoping for speedy action. They have trust in the police as this medium interact directly with top cops,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni, also the spokesperson for the Mumbai Police. At least 10% of the complaints have been tweeted by citizens who were unable to contact the control room, said an officer.
