MAHARASHTRA GOVERNOR OPENS SESSION WITH WORN-OUT SPEECH The state assembly budget session started off with the governor’s customary address to the state legislature. The governor speech was like old wine in new bottle as there was no new promise that the Governor shared with the legislature on the first day of the budget session. It looked as if K Sankaranarayanan merely recycled the claims and assurances already made by his ministers and leaders of the Democratic Front coalition. In his worn-out opening address at the state assembly’s budget session, Governor K Sankaranarayanan said no family below the poverty line will be left homeless by 2012. The promise came in the wake of announcements already made by the housing department to build 10 lakh houses for the poor, many of them under centrally sponsored schemes. Sankaranarayanan’s half-hour speech was disrupted by the opposition at several points. It raised slogans about inflation and the subsidies given to liquor distilleries.
