State Labor Minister Ganesh Naik has pushed the buck of mending labor laws for special economic zones on the center. In an interview with Navi Mumbai News, the Minister says that they bend the rules only after being told by the Center to do so. While the center said that the law of the land would be applicable for SEZs, the Maharashtra State made a special exception for SEZs by making the state’s labor laws invalid and formulating new labor laws, where no condition of minimum wages, employee welfare and job security would be applicable. The state is being criticized for overlooking welfare of labors and giving special treatment to the SEZs. However, the State Labor Minister Ganesh Naik has come out in defending the state’s decision to change labor laws. In an interview with Navi Mumbai News, the Minister said that they formed new labor laws for SEZs only after being told by the Central Govt. to do so. He justified the change in labor laws saying that giving incentives to SEZs like relaxing labor laws will help bring investment to the state. However, experts say that will the state providing every incentive possible to the SEZs, relaxing labor laws was not needed and will go against their welfare in this region. The Thane’s Belapur Belt’s fall from grace has already rendered thousands of workers jobless, now the question is “Will the State too prove that Mumbai is a city for the rich” or will it have regards and concern for the common man too?
