AFTER MCGM, NOW FAILED PANVEL LEADERS EYE WATER FROM MORBE DAM

panvel-dam-2Earlier MCGM and now Panvel Municipal Council are eyeing water from Morbe Dam to solve the water woes of Panvel city. Call it the failure of leaders ruling Panvel for ages that today they have to make a beeline to NMMC and leaders of Navi Mumbai asking for water. Who doesn’t remember how out of the blue former MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak, while addressing a weekly press conference had said that they have asked NMMC for water supply from Morbe Dam in wake of Mumbai’s water crisis. The demand from MCGM Commissioner was just another proof failed leadership and foresight due to which despite MCGM being the richest municipal corporations of the country, Mumbai suffered from water crisis. And now Panvel leaders are making similar demands of water supply from Morbe Dam exposing the failure of these very leaders in Panvel for the last so many decades. In fact the demand of water supply comes from Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur who demanding water supply from Morbe Dam to ease water woes of Panvel. He made the demand in the recently concluded budget session of the State Assembly. MLA Prashant Thakur’s demand exposes his own failure as President of the Panvel Municipal Council. The PMC has its own Dehrang Dam but in the year 2005, when flood hit the city like never before, silt accumulated in the dam reducing its capacity upto 50%. And despite having Congress’s Chief Minister in the state, Prashant Thakur had failed to get the de-silting work of the dam done when he was President of the Panvel Municipal Council despite him and his father Ramsheth Thakur sharing a strong rapport with all the senior Congress leaders. Now call it the cover up attempt of his failure as PMC President that MLA Prashant Thakur is eyeing the water supply from Morbe Dam of NMMC. Presently the Panvel is dependent on MJP that is the Maharashtra Jal Pradhikaran, MIDC and CIDCO for water supply. The PMC’s own Dehrang dam located 16km away from Panvel with capacity of 3.57 million cubic meter but residents still have to pay water rates at much higher price due to the failure of the leaders of Panvel. This is because Dehrang Dam is able to supply only 12 MLD water while the need of Panvel is 35 MLD. With the entire summer ahead of them, other leader of Panvel too are making a beeline to Navi Mumbai leaders with their appeal of water from Morbe Dam. PMC President Sunil Mohod informed about one such meeting. At time when Panvel and Mumbai suffer from water crisis, Morbe Dam is nothing less than a signature of successful leadership in Navi Mumbai. It also exposes the failure of leaders of Panvel who have been ruling the city for decades but failed to show long term visionary qualities. These leaders hold grand events for self promotions but when their work does not reflect what they boast. Due to which today the key of ending water woes of Panvel lies with corporators of the NCP led Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. This failure of MLA Prashant Thakur will also disappoint Youth Congress Rahul Gandhi who had vouched for Prashant Thakur’s performance during a public rally in Panvel.
