AIRPORT SLUM REHABILITATION TO INCLUDE 20000 FAMILIES IN THE FIRST PHASE

airport-1About 20,000 families living in slums at Vile Parle, Santacruz and Sahar near the airport are likely to be the beneficiaries in the first phase of rehabilitation that will begin in December. About 275 acres of airport land is encroached upon. A few days ago, airport officials had informed the state government that, in the first phase, they would like to rehabilitate people occupying 79 acres. A tentative list given to the government includes slums at Bamanwada, Ashok Nagar, Sahar Road, Sutar Pakkadi, Tanaji Nagar, Jari Mari, Sandesh Nagar, Navpada, Shastri Nagar and Agripada. However, a Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson said that a decision on which areas will be rehabilitated first is yet to be finalised. Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL), which has bagged the contract to resettle slumdwellers has begun construction in two plots at Kurla measuring nearly 60 acres. Also, proposals submitted by the company to house about 4,500 slumdwellers at Bhandup and Mulund are awaiting SRA approval.
