ALARMING SITUATION FOR NAVI MUMBAI AS CASES OF LEPTOSPIROSIS CONTINUE TO BE REPORTED FROM THE CITY

leptospirosis-3A case of leptospirosis has been reported from Nerul. While the hospital had informed the NMMC Health department about the disease, NMMC Health officials are yet to pay a visit to the affected person’s home. With monsoons here, it is important that precautions be taken to ensure that monsoon illnesses do not strike. Unfortunately, NMMC seems to be doing little in this matter as there has been an increasing number of diseases like malaria, dengue and now leptospirosis reported from Navi Mumbai. 30 years old Yashwanti Salvi, a resident of Sec 10, Nerul was admitted in Shushrusha Hospital with high fever and was diagnosed with leptospirosis. The doctor in charge confirmed that the patient was suffering from leptospirosis. Local Corporator Vaishali Tidke informed NMTV News that despite informing the NMMC Health Dept., no one came for checking the area for over 4 days. She further echoed what all residents of Navi Mumbai have been complaining constantly – that NMMC’s Health Dept. fogging and spraying activities to control mosquitoes is not being done. Worst still is that the fact that despite being informed of the leptospirosis case in Nerul, NMMC dept. has not visited the affected person’s home to carry out fogging and spraying activity and hence the threat of the disease still prevails. And when the NMMC Medical Officer Dr. D R Paropkari is posed this negligence, he goes on the defensive. Sources allege that such massive corruption inflicts the fogging and spraying processes in NMMC that the city suffers every year with this year being the worst. But according to Dr. Paropkari, diseases cannot be stopped. NMMC health department has been allotted with crores of budget to maintain a hygienic atmosphere for the people to live in, but looking at how it has failed to control the rate of these diseases it clearly indicates that few corrupt officers are somewhere compromising on the need of fogging and spraying activities.
