nmmc-standing-1If you think that only the opposition made all the right noise at the marathon discussions of the proposed municipal budget 2011-12 at the NMMC Standing Committee meet, then think again. Even the ruling front corporators were critical and in fact of projects promoted by their own party. The discussions in day 1 revolved around the income aspects. Corporators spoke on property tax, cess tax and other taxes. The corporators did not miss the chance of criticizing the administration on some subjects and even gave their suggestions to the officials to improve their performance. NMTV News bring to you highlights of some of the significant points raised by the administration. Shiv Sena corporator Vijayanand Mane made some very significant suggestions. He pointed out that NMMC has given tax holiday to IT companies but there are scores of such companies in Navi Mumbai. He questioned why NMMC was not being given a grant from the state for giving this tax holiday to IT companies. He stressed that NMMC should take over all property still under CIDCO’s possession in NMMC’s jurisdiction so that the corporation could earn revenue from these as well. He voiced confidence that if NMMC took his suggestions seriously, then there could be 100% increase in the projected income of NMMC. NCP Corporator Suraj Patil referred to the reports on fire safety in high towers being aired on NMTV. He said that the same should be studied so that NMMC could earn revenue from fire tax. Shiv Sena corporator Dilip Ghodekar voiced concern over the practice of approving proposals worth Crores of Rupees as urgent proposals without properly studying them. One of the failed projects of NMMC, the STP plants was a subject of criticism by both the ruling and opposition corporators. Shiv Sena corporator Dilip Ghodekar said that all assurances of income and expectations from STP plants felt flat on its face. Shiv Sena corporator Vijayanand Mane said that the NMMC was draining away 350 MLD of sewerage water being cleaned at the STP into the sea everyday which exposes that all the projections of the budgets in context of STP is only on paper. Not just Shiv Sena corporators but to the shockingly even the ruling front corporators criticized the STP plant project despite the fact that this project has been promoted by the NCP party leaders themselves. NCP Corporator Shivram Patil put it bluntly without hesitation that the STP project is a failure. Even Standing Committee Chairman Anant Sutar too did not mince words to put the failed STP projects on record stating that the income being shown from the project since last two budgets is failing to be implemented.
