As thousands queued up to apply for Mumbai Housing Area Development Authority houses in Mumbai, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said that Marathi people should get “at least” 80% of these houses. Commenting from the Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamna, Bal Thackarey stated that there was nothing wrong in demanding houses built by MHADA for Marathi people. The 863 MHADA houses belong to the government and that at least 80% of these should be given to Marathis. Stating that the number of applications for the 863 houses would be around five lakh, a record, Thackeray quested where are Marathi people in this record. It maybe be recalled that the Shiv Sena’s demand had received strong opposition from many political parties including the Samjawadi Party which stated that houses should be alotted on the basis of lottery and not on regionalism.
