From being a school drop-out at the age of 18 years to becoming the Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, BJP’s Chanakya has come a long long way. In the 2019 general elections, Amit Shah contested and won from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of over 5.5 lakh votes. He broke all records of LK Advani.
Amit Shah made his name as a ruthless backroom politician and master strategist who won election victories for his boss, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also has a reputation for the incendiary, recently describing illegal Bangladeshi immigrants as “like termites” taking grain and jobs from India’s poor. Now, 54-year-old Amit Shah will have to demonstrate he has the temperament to run India’s most sensitive cabinet portfolio, home affairs.
THE MAN BEHIND THE SUCCESSFUL FORMULA OF “HINDUTVA + NATIONALISM”
He combined BJP’s core Hindutva plank with a hardcore nationalism agenda and set up a huge ground-level organisational setup to execute it — the BJP’s ‘Chanakya’ Amit Shah blazed such a trail that the ‘Modi Wave 2.0’ surpassed its own original avatar with a much bigger saffron surge.
A CLASSICAL MUSIC LOVER WHO LOVES TO WATCH CRICKET
Known as an astute strategist whose non-political interests range from playing chess and watching cricket to stage performances and listening to classical music, 54-year-old Shah is often hailed as the BJP’s most successful president for crafting its way to power states after states. The record tally that he has now delivered for the BJP in the Lok Sabha 2019 elections is already being seen by many as something that would be difficult to repeat, though there are others who believe there is more to come as they point towards further inroads to be made in West Bengal, Odisha and in down South.
THE MAN BEHIND THE MISSION FROM “PANCHAYAT TO PARLIAMENT”
A man with avowed aim of having the BJP rule from “panchayat to Parliament”, Amit Shah has built his party into a formidable army that has been forever marching on since he took charge as its president in July 2014, turning India more saffron than it has ever been. A relentless politician, he has run 29 elections, from municipal bodies to parliament, and lost none. He travelled 150,000 km (93,200 miles) to address 161 public rallies during the election, he said earlier this month.
AMIT SHAH ENSURED FARMERS’ ISSUES AND UNEMPLOYMENT WERE OVERSHADOWED
It was Amit Shah’s efforts helped to blunt voter discontent at a lack of job creation and distress about low farm incomes by portraying the opposition as weak and indecisive, at best, and at worst as appeasers of minority Muslims and arch-foe Pakistan – deftly exploiting national security fear
Amit Shah is known as a Hindu-hardliner with uncompromising views. He mocked Rahul Gandhi, the chief of the opposition Congress party, for choosing to run in a Muslim-dominated constituency in the southern state of Kerala. Like PM Modi, Amit Shah has faced accusations that he looked the other way as Gujarat’s home minister in 2002 during the Godhra riots. Amit Shah was however acquitted in 2014 of separate charges levelled in 2010 over alleged extrajudicial killings. In 2010, Shah spent time in jail for the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case. He got conditional bail to stay away from Gujarat.
AMIT SHAH ON HIS WAY TO SUCCEED PM MODI
PM Modi and Amit Shah are a magical team. The age difference between them is 14 years. With age on his side, Amit Shah is now in a prime position to take over once PM Modi bows out when he turns 75 in 2025, a party rule the prime minister adopted to edge out older BJP leaders who had sought to resist his rise. During the Modi regime, no other politician was considered a taller figure in Indian politics than Amit Shah after the PM himself. Just a few months back, Amit Shah said the BJP will remain in power for 50 years if it wins the 2019 elections. With the 2019 done and dusted, he can be trusted to work at the “50-year” saffron rule in India. If he does succeed, it will put Amit Shah in a strong position to eventually succeed his master Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
