AND DESPITE THE PROTEST, DHARAVI REHABILITATION MAY FINALLY GET GOING

dharavi-1The SRA is inching closer to finalizing the bidder for the nearly Rs 10,000-crore Dharavi rehabilitation project. MHADA has convened a pre-bid meeting to zero in on prospective bidders for the redevelopment. According to the plan drawn up by the state government, of the 557 acres over which the slum dwellers are spread, the actual redevelopment will span 360 acres. At an estimated Rs 9,200 crore, Dharavi will be redeveloped as an integrated township with modern amenities. According to the SRA norms, only slum dwellers whose names are in the voters’ list as on January 1, 1995 and are the actual occupants of the hutment would be eligible for rehabilitation. Each family will be allotted a self-contained house of 300 sq ft free of cost. The SRA has decided to retain the industrial and manufacturing units set up in Dharavi and encourage them by providing technical and economic support for their sustainable development. However, while the agencies are finalizing the bids, the residents of Dharavi are opposing the allotment of 300 sq mt and demanding 400 sq mt houses instead. Bureau report NMTV
