While in the midst of all this, another case has been filed by the Bombay Environmental Action Group against four villagers of Karave village for mangroves destruction. The four villagers however claim innocence, stating that this is a conspiracy against them. The BEAG filed a case against Karave village’s Sarpanch Ravindra Naik, Ganesh Tandel, Padmakar Juikar and Krishna Tandel for alleged destruction of mangroves next to NRI Complex. They NGO allege that these villagers deployed JCBs for destroying mangroves for a period of 15 days. The blame has been endorsed by the Thane Collector, Konkan Commissioner, CIDCO and NMMC and a complaint has been filed by the Nerul Police Station. The Nerul Police arrested the four villagers on October 3 and the matter is now being heard in court. The villagers have refuted the allegations on them. The villagers say that next to the creek, they owned saltpan land that belongs to their families for the last 200 years. But now, they only can do fishing here. They say that they are being made the scapegoats in the recent High Court order given for allegedly CIDCO destroying mangroves for a gold course. The lawyer Pramod Bajpai says that in case if the four villagers were doing mangroves destruction work for 15 days, why was action not taken and why has the JCB not been seized?
