Differences between the Shiv Sena and BJP came out in the open recently when the Shiv Sena protested against the Legislative Council chairperson Shivaji Deshmukh’s decision to retain Pandurang Phundkar of the BJP as the Leader of the Opposition. The Shiv Sena MLCs in their protest against the Legislative Council Chairperson’s decision of retaining Pandurang Phundkar of the BJP as the Leader of the Opposition also staged a walkout in the council after Phundkar was retained. Sena MLC and leader of the Sena group had given a letter to the chairperson in February, stating that since the Sena now has more MLCs than the BJP, the post of the Opposition leader should be given to them. Deshmukh read out a letter from the principal secretary of the legislature who had stated that considering the status of the BJP and norms laid down by some previous presiding officers, the post had to be given to the BJP. The Sena, which is already upset after losing the post of the Leader of the Opposition in the legislative assembly, therefore demanded the post in the council. Bureau report – NMTV News.
