Sending your children to school in an unlicensed private vehicle would not worry you anymore as BEST has decided to ferry school children to school and back in BEST buses. After the two separate accidents which killed six children in private vehicles, BEST has decided to have its own school bus service. Although there is no detailed proposal as of yet, depot managers across Mumbai have been asked to get in touch with well-known schools to discuss point-to-point bus services. We spoke with the General Manager of BEST, Uttam Khobragade who stated that many private vehicles do not follow the right norms for safety and they want to take this up as a social responsibility. This proposal has received a mixed response from parents and educationists. While some say that BEST buses will be a safer option for students and prove economical for parents, some activists say that it’s not possible for the BEST buses to negotiate narrow gullies and bylanes. While this proposal of BEST needs to be applauded, it cannot be forgotten that even BEST buses have mowed down many people on the road.
