Besides the issue of bogus ration cards, the BJP party has also demanded action in the sugar scam. In a press conference held in Mumbai, former MP and BJP leader Kirid Somaiya has made some serious allegations in the sugar scam stating that the scam runs into 1000s of Crores of Rupees. Kirid Somaiya said that in the 2008 – 09, the Union Agriculture Ministry headed by Sharad Pawar had exported 48 lac tones of sugar to private exporters at the rate of Rs. 12 to Rs. 13 with a subsidy of Rs. 1.45 kg per kg. And now the same government is crying shortage of sugar to an extent that it is being sold at Rs. 35 to Rs. 36 per kg today. Kirid Somaiya said that they have demanded a CBI enquiry in the matter and have also demanded explanation from the government on the role of the commodity exchange and the forward market commission in the entire scam.
