The budget estimates for 2008-09 that was presented by the BMC at the recent Standing Committee meet is an enormous Rs 16,792 crore. The size of the budget is 30% higher than last year’s Rs 12,877 crore. This years budget report presented by BMC commissioner Jairaj Pathak is a whopping Rs 16,792 crore. Its plan outlay is bigger than Delhi, Kerala and Goa municipality put together. Compared to Mumbai, Delhi’s municipal budget is a measely Rs 5,100 crore while Kerala’s plan outlay last year was Rs 6,400 crore. Goa’s is under Rs 1,500 crore. According to the BMC Commissioner, increase in the budgetary estimates was largely due to the “robust growth in municipal revenues and the decision to utilise special funds for taking up major capital works”. The civic body has also proposed to exempt garments and textiles from octroi from the next financial year. Apart from this, more than Rs 960 crore has been allotted for major road repair works. However, the budget is being highly opposed by the opposition leader, Rajhans Vaikar who said that the budget was not for the common man. With cameraperson Naresh Gajalwar, Alok Pagare for NMTV News.
