BMC KEEN TO ELIMINATE OCTROI AGENTS

BMC-2Not wavering from its stance on the elimination of Octroi agents completely from the system, BMC has decided to introduce smart card system. The decision of BMC to eliminate Octroi agents led to a strike by the Mumbai Octroi agents Federation protesting against the civic body’s non-acceptance of cheque payments and seizing of vehicles evading Octroi. However, BMC is standing firm on its decision and would soon introduce a Smart Card policy for online payment of Octroi duty and would be affiliating SBI as the sole agent. The smart cards would be given to importers based on their income and will have the details of the driver and the truck. The drivers would need to swipe the card on Octroi posts and the transaction will be directly made through SBI. Whereas Octroi agents charge 2.5 to 5 percent for their services, this system would charge 0.5 percent as processing fee. The system is expected to be implemented from May 1. Bureau report – NMTV
