In a major drive BMC razed down 1,300 structures on Wadala’s Zakeria Bunder Road with shopkeepers trying salvage any many of their belongings as possible. Acting on the Mumbai High Court orders given last November, BMC razed down around 1300 shops at Wadala’s Zakeria Bunder Road. The municipal commissioner and MMRDA had ordered for all structures on the footpaths of P. Demello Road, which includes Zakeria Bunder Road, to be demolished by May 31 for a road-widening project. As part of the road-widening project for P. Demello Road undertaken in January, Zakeria Bunder Road will be widened to 156 ft. For this the structures were demolished along the main road. The demolition was carried out over a 3-km stretch till the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station. While the BMC claims that notices were issued to the shop owners, the public refuted the claims. We spoke to some of tehm during the demolition. Agitated shop owners called this injustice on part of the corporation for not intimating them about the demolition leading to major losses for them.
