BMC soon to increase the tax net by survey of properties

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to soon start a survey to assess properties to increase the tax net. Using the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology and video-recording with a 360 degree panoramic view for its records, the survey will help the civic body identify unassessed properties.

An announcement on the survey was made in the civic budget 2016-17 and a provision of Rs 12 crore was proposed. Civic officials said once the survey is completed, they will have data on over 3 lakh residential, commercial and industrial properties, and land.

The data will be used by other civic departments too.

The technology, coupled with video-recordings, will record the length, breadth and height of properties along with the roads on which they exist. This is also an attempt with which the municipal corporation will be able to understand the actual existing building and the one in their records, when the occupation certificate was granted.

The survey will be conducted with vehicle-mounted equipment, and where the four-wheeler cannot enter, it will be done by using equipment mounted on two-wheelers. Civic officials said that the tendering process is currently in its final stages and the survey will start soon.
