Bombay high court asks State whether parking be allowed under flyovers ?

The Bombay high court on Tuesday directed the Maharashtra government to reply if parking under Mumbai’s 27 flyovers can be allowed once again to ease traffic congestion.
The government has to state if the “security angle can be taken care of after ensuring that the parking areas are scrutinized and checked”. A bench headed by Justice Vidyasagar Kanade expressed concern about the increase in new vehicles and a dearth of parking facilities. “Parking is a very serious problem in Bombay (sic). You just cannot close your eyes and let the people suffer,” said Justice Kanade. The judges said metal detectors can always be used to frisk vehicles as done by most establishments and hotels otherwise there is “wastage of space”.
The court heard a PIL that urged to allow parking under the flyovers, saying it will ease traffic congestion. The bench said it has learnt that the RTO registers a large number of vehicles daily. “What will be the condition in the next ten years?” Justice Kanade wondered. The petitioner’s advocate, Uday Warunjikar, said a number of vehicles come to Mumbai for a day and then return.
The court was told there is an earlier interim HC order, directing the BMC not to allow parking below flyovers due to security risks. “There is risk everywhere,” said Justice Kanade. The HC directed the state “to inform if security perception has changed over time” on September 27.
