Chief Minister Ashok Chavan skipped the agrculture meet held to discuss the plans for kharif crop. This drew a lot of criticism from cabinet ministers representing the Congress and the NCP. Also, the chief minister’s move to allow agriculture minister Balasaheb Thorat to chair the meet has upset the ministers who said that Thorat had not shown good judgment in handling the affairs of the ministry and therefore should not have been allowed to head the crucial assembly. Sources reveal that Thorat did not place orders for fertilisers on time, because of which it is scarcely available to farmers in the state. A senior official in the revenue ministry said that this is the second successive year where the state’s planning has gone wrong. The matter would have been under wraps had the farmers not voiced their protest against the shortage of fertilisers across the state. A senior bureaucrat in the ministry of agriculture revealed that they are able to meet only 45% of the demand placed by the farmers across state. Bureau report – NMTV News.
