CBI To Probe Cambridge Analytica Data Breach Case

In a significant move, the Central government has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking an inquiry against data mining and analysis firm Cambridge Analytica.

The company is at the heart of the case involving alleged breach of Facebook user data seeking information about its clients in India and whether it had harvested their user profiles.

Union minister of electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the CBI will determine
whether the British company violated Indian laws.

Prasad informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the company denied to the government that data from Indians
was breached, but that contradicted information received from Facebook.

India, in March, slapped a notice on Cambridge Analytica to explain if it was engaged in improperly harvesting Facebook data of Indian citizens. But Cambridge Analytica announced its closure in a statement on its website and claimed it had been ‘vilified’ for activities that are legal and considered a standard component of online advertising.
