CENTRAL AVIATION MINITSER PARFUL PATEL AND CHIEF MINISTER VILASRAO DESHMUKH GIVES ASSURACES FOR NAVI MUMBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

airportDue to the objections raised by the central environment ministry, the project of International airport in Navi Mumbai has faced its biggest setback. The Chief Minister however says he will personally take up the matter with the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The whole land where the airport will be constructed in Panvel is 5 to 7 meters below the sea level. If the airport project is executed, first there will be massive environment massacre and then disaster every year as the Kalamboli, New Panvel, Kamothe & Khanda Colony areas are all below sea level. If Gadhi River is filled and the land for Panvel is filled and its height is raised, then flooding in nearby residential areas will become a common occurrence every year claiming life and property, experts have been voicing time and again. However, overlooking all the concerns the state went ahead with its plans that faced the biggest setback when the Union Environment Ministry rejected the proposal asking the state to look for another site. Chief Minister Vilasaro Deshmukh has himself agreed that looking for another site is impossible and is now going to take the matter up with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who holds the portfolio of the Union Environment Ministry. Meanwhile however, the property market has been hit severely after the news. Sources reveal that bookings have gone down by 70% in a market that was already facing the biggest low in recent times. Reliable sources also reveal that the move is due to the pressure mounted by the strong Navi Mumbai builder lobby to prevent the crash of real estate prices across Navi Mumbai. Though the site is below 7 feet sea level the builder lobby wants the airport at the same site even at the cost of environmental massacre. From Panvel, Zeba Warsia for NMTV News.
