Charity commission takes strict action against trusts for breach of Public Trust Act

A month after taking on errant charitable hospitals for their failure to provide treatment to poor patients at a reasonable cost, charity commissioner S G Dige has issued show cause notices to 1.3 lakh trusts and de-registered 60,000 trusts for blatant violation of the Maharashtra Public Trust Act.

For the first time, strict action has been taken against the trusts for breach of Public Trust Act.

Dige has embarked on a massive action plan to ensure charitable hospitals across the state implement the scheme drafted by the Bombay high court for providing treatment to poor patients.

A senior official said after Dige took over the reins, it was found that out of the over eight lakh public trusts registered in the state, 3.95 lakh were non-functional.

Over 1.9 lakh trusts had not submitted statement of accounts, present status of office-bearers and certificate of registration. most of the errant trusts had not even submitted their annual statement of accounts for last five years.
