Chris Gayle becomes the first batsman to score 10,000 runs in T20 cricket

Chris Gayle has become the first batsman in the world to reach the landmark of 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket. The big-hitting West Indian achieved the feat during his ongoing innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore in game 20 of IPL 2017 versus Gujarat Lions on Tuesday when he steered a single to third man during the fourth over.

Before this match started, Gayle, 37, was already the leading run-getter in T20s and the owner of a host of records in the format: the most centuries (18) and fifties (60), highest individual score (175* for RCB in the IPL), joint fastest fifty (off 12 balls for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League), most sixes (736) and fours (764).

His most recent outing in T20s before the start of IPL 2017 was for Karachi Kings, his 14th T20 franchise, for whom he scored 160 runs in nine games during this year’s Pakistan Premier League.

In the opening match of the IPL between last year’s losing finalists RCB and defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gayle scored 32 off 21 balls, followed by six off eight against Delhi Daredevils and then 22 versus Mumbai Indians to take his overall T20 tally to 9997 runs. He became the first entrant to the 10k club on Tuesday.
