Ratnottam Das of Apeejay School and Ashwin Rao of DPS School Neru have made their parents and school proud by winning gold medals at the Dr Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik Competition 2009-10. 46000 students participated in this completion organized by Greater Mumbai Science Teachers Association across Maharashtra for students between sixth and 9th standard to encourage the students to take interest in science and to inculcate scientific attitude in them. When most children of their age are either watching Cartoons or playing, these two prefer to watch Discovery, National Geographic and Animal Planet. Ratnottam’s project was about Effects of Construction on environment. Ratnottam aspires to be an industrial engineer. Another student who brought laurels was Ashwin Rao of DPS School, Nerul. His project was about carbon footprints in public gardens. He said that NMMC Gardeners burn dried leaves and twigs in the gardens. Instead he suggested alternate measures of utilizing the dried leaves and twigs like composting, mushing of leaves, making brickets and making an eco club. He was happy that the NNMC Gardeners no longer burn the leaves in the garden. With cameraman Vinayak Dalvi and Satish Garud Jan Cabral for NMTV News.
