CIVIC BODY LEARNS IT HAS MORE WELLS THAN IT KNEW OF

bmc-wells-1It takes a water crisis-like the one looming large over the city at present-for MCGM to get its numbers right. Now that the civic body is looking to natural wells to bail it out, it only recently discovered that the number of these reservoirs is much higher than it had estimated. MCGM officials, until a fortnight ago, had felt that there were 4,000 wells in the city. But, the insecticide department, which keeps a record of these figures to curb the spread of mosquitoes, pegged the number at 12,351. Incidentally, this report is submitted to MCGM’s water department every year. But it seems as if the civic administration has paid attention to it only now in the face of water shortage. In fact, a fortnight ago, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Phatak had said there were 1,400 wells, including bore wells, in the city, out of which only 400 were being used to draw water. However, a recent survey revealed the number was much higher. There are 2,204 wells in the island city, 7,283 in the western suburbs and 2,864 in the eastern suburbs. Now, MCGM has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for each ward to construct bore wells. With cameraperson Ranjeet Gupta, Hansraj Kanaujia for NMTV News.
