CIVIC HELPLINE FLOODED WITH WATER RELATED COMPLAINTS

water-complent-While the city suffers through a water crisis, the phone in the civic control room hasn’t stopped ringing with disgruntled citizens calling to register water-related complaints. The exclusive civic helpline 108, launched in November to deal with water complaints, registered more than 3,195 complaints in just five months. The water department has appointed three junior engineers, each having an eight hour shift round the clock. They sit in the civic disaster management cell to register the complaints. As soon as a complaint gets registered, the engineer forwards it to the water department of the ward office concerned. They then act on the complaint received and submit a report to the chief hydraulic officer. Data till April 10 shows there were 1,882 complaints of leakages, followed by 477 complaints of unauthorised water connections. There were 140 complaints of contamination. This, when the civic body is facing an acute shortage of drinking water, because of insufficient rainfall in catchments. MCGM currently supply 2,900 mld with a 15 per cent water cut for residential and 30 per cent for commercial consumers. The lakes Vihar and Vaitarna have stopped supplying water because of their depleted water level. The city also loses about 20 per cent of its daily supply due to theft, leakage and pilferage.
