Looks like the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s meeting with Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has had the right effects on the Chief Minister. On his return, when residents of Seawoods NRI Complex met the Chief Minister voicing concern on the pond filling work being done by CIDCO, the Chief Minister immediately ordered that CIDCO stop the work. All the way from Nerul, residents of NRI Complex at Seawood Estate arrived at Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s residence in south Mumbai to save a lake. This is how serious the NRI complex residents are of saving a natural water body in their vicinity. And much to the relief of the residents, the Chief Minister has issued a stop work notice to CIDCO. It maybe recalled that NMTV News has aired a report on the protest of the residents who came out on the streets to protest against the illegal filling of the water body by CIDCO. Around 150 residents of the complex, including women and children under the banner of the Seawoods Lake Protection Forum, came out on the streets, holding placards with slogans, criticizing CIDCO’s abrupt move of burying the lake, thereby compelling the CIDCO civil contractor to halt the work immediately. One of the residents informed that in their correspondence with CIDCO, the latter claimed that the water body was not a lake but a low lying area where water accumulates. When the residents did not receive any positive reply from CIDCO, they decided to take up the matter to the Chief Minister. And much to the relief of the residents, the Chief Minister’s assurance proved true as by evening CIDCO received the stay order and work was immediately stopped on the site.
