COMMITTEE AFTER COMMITTEE AND STATE STILL FAILS TAKING EFEFCTIVE ACTION CORRUPTION IN CIDCO

cidco-committee-3This is not the first time but the state government has once again set up a committee to probe a particular case of corruption at CIDCO on the failure of yet another committee it had appointed prior to that. Reacting after eight years of delay, the state government has handed over the enquiry report of irregularities and wrongdoings in a particular case to a retired bureaucrat as the prior committee failed to do for the last eight years. In the year 1999, the state’s legislature Public Account Committee stumbled upon irregularities related to payment of around Rs 52 lakhs to two private companies by CIDCO for the supply of machinery. Without taking the mandatory approval from the government, CIDCO administration returned the payment to the companies. Trying to get to the depth of the matter, the government entrusted the job to the Commissioner of Konkan Division in the year 2000 who failed to file the report. In the intervening years from 2000 to 2008, five IAS officers have occupied the post of Konkan Divisional Commissioner and the report is still hanging in the balance. Finally, after eight years of delay, the state government has given the job to a retired bureaucrat giving a deadline of one month.
