COMMITTEES AFTER COMMITTEES BUT NO CONCRETE RESULTS AS FIRE INCIDENTS INCREASES IN MUMBAI CITY

bmc-fire-1While the many fire incidents in the city have time and again raised the question of fire safety norms, the only thing it has brought out of MCGM is the setting up enquiry committees over committees. After the major fire that broke out at Infinity Mall, Andheri and the commercial outlet at Kalbadevi, MCGM was once again seen waking up to the enormous violations of fire safety norms in the city and carrying out formalities. According to Chief Fire Officer P.D. Kargopikar, the 19 malls surveyed by them revealed that most of them were in violation of fire safety norms. He informed that Infinity Mall, Andheri where the major fire erupted was also violating fire safety norms and a notice was also sent to the mall management. While MCGM additional commissioner, Kishore Gajbhiye, agrees that only after receiving the NOC from the Chief Fire Officer does MCGM gives OC, he did not want to speak on the action that would be taken if the premises were violating fire safety norms and the fire fighting dept still issued NOC to it. All in all, the way fire safety norms are being violated by malls and commercial complexes on a large scale, with MCGM hardly doing anything clearly indicates that the civic body has become more of a corporation that is looking to protect mall owners and commercial complexes than protecting the innocent lives that are lost during such hazardous fire incidents.
