CONTRACT LABORS CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR JUSTICE AGAINST NMMC

Contract labors protesting NMMC’s discrimination in implementing a uniform policy for them took out a morcha to NMMC and met NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik. The problem continues to be that contract labors are not working on permanent basis. Despite an 17th October 2003 government GR that instructed NMMC to make contract labors working in the garden, malaria and cleaning departments of NMMC permanent, till August 2008 this was not done. Only due to the intervention of the Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, contract labors were not made permanent but equal wages for equal workers was implemented from 1 July 2007. However, despite public representatives passing the proposal with a supplementary demand that all contract labors of NMMC should be brought under this policy, the NMMC administration implemented the same only for the departments mentioned in the GR. This led to unrest among the contract labors of the hospital, dumping ground, water resources, STP plants and Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium department who took out a morcha to NMMC under the leadership of NCP State Vice President and Union Leader Suresh Thakur. The delegation met NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik and submitted their demand to bring their wages at par with permanent workers.
