CORPORATORS PULL UP MCGM FOR INCOMPLETE NULLAH WORK IN MUMBAI

mcgm-2Lashing out at the MCGM administration for incomplete nullah-desilting work, the corporators threatened disciplinary action against officials ranging from ward-level engineers to the deputy municipal commissioners. A few hours of showers have exposed that pre-monsoon work seem to be a miserable failure in Mumbai. Leader of Opposition in MCGM raised the issue during the meeting held at the civic body this week and immediately found support from corporators of all political parties. Corporators accused the MCGM administration for incomplete nullah-desilting work, the corporators threatened disciplinary action against officials ranging from ward-level engineers to the deputy municipal commissioners. They also rubbished civic body’s claims of completing 95% nullah cleaning work and said that the work was not up to the mark. Leader of the Opposition in the MCGM Rajhans Singh said that despite all corporators and MLAs repeatedly urging the MCGM to carry out the nullah cleaning work properly, the administration has been lax. Rajhans Singh said that all ruling front leaders are were visiting the city to check pre monsoon work but every time it floods they toss the blame on the state. On the other hand, Shiv Sena’s Leader of the House Sunil Prabhu however said that besides, MCGM – AAI, MMRDA, Mumbai Port Trust, PWD and other government agencies were also responsible for nullah cleaning in Mumbai. He added that vigilance department should inspect all nullahs and give a report. Officials in areas where the work is not done should be penalized. Prabhu said unless action is taken against officials, the nullah work will continue to remain unsatisfactory. Open nullahs in the city have been a cause of concern as dumping of garbage chokes them resulting in flooding during monsoons. The MCGM has spent about Rs 70 crore in awarding contracts for carrying out desilting work throughout the year. Corporators complained that despite the contract terms require contractors to carry out the desilting work regularly throughout the year, it is done just a month before the rains. However, there little chances that the administration will take action against any contractor or official. Even the protest by both the ruling side and opposition seemed more of a noise created ahead f any municipal polls. With bureau inputs, Hansraj Kanojia for NMTV News.
