Mumbai’s first alternative transport system, the monorail, a surrogate to the overburdened railways was put through a test drive on Republic Day. The test drive of the monorail between Vadala and Bharti Park was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was present for the test run of the Rs 2460 crore monorail which will eventually run between Jacob Circle and Chembur. A consortium of Larsen and Toubro and SCOMI Engineering Bhd, Malaysia is building the 19.54 km line. The trial however took place on the 108 meter stretch in Vadala. The project is likely to be completed in two phases. The construction that started in November 2008 is likley to be completed in 2011. On the occasion, State ministers Arif Naseem Khan, Sachin Ahir; MP Eknath Gaikwad, MLA Jagannath Shetty along with public representatives of big organizations were present.
