CRACKDOWN ON SHOPS SELLING MOBILES WITHOUT IMEI NOS

mobail-2In a bid to stop sale and use of all mobile phones without valid International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, the MRA Marg police and representatives of several mobile phone companies conducted raids at Manish Market and Musafir Khana. During 26/11, the Mumbai Police and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) were unable to trace the mobiles used by the terrorists as they did not have IMEI numbers. Following this, the Government of India had thus asked all service providers to bar phones without valid IMEI numbers. The Government of India issued a circular on September 3 to ban all phones without legitimate IMEI numbers from November 30. During various raids conducted by the police, many mobile phones – mostly Chinese-made – were recovered. The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique 15-digit number given to every single mobile phone and is usually found printed inside the battery compartment.
