BMC’s Assessment and Collection department is re-launching its drive to nab down errant vehicle owners, who drive their cars in the city but pay taxes applicable to rural areas. The drive will target city vehicle-owners who register their vehicles out of Mumbai in remote areas under Gram Panchayats, where there is no octroi, making tax liability zero. The vehicle-owners thus evade the 4.5 per cent tax they would have to pay in Mumbai, even if the rural address shown is false. In the year 2004-2005, BMC had fined 2,253 vehicles in Mumbai, collecting a revenue of Rs 2,96,7008.
