In a press conference called at Panvel Municipal Council, the PWP defended their party and called allegations of corruption baseless. The resignation of 7 PWP corporators at Panvel Municipal Council alleging corruption in their own party in the council’s functioning has sent shock waves across Panvel. Tired of the pathetic conditions prevailing in Panvel for the last two years, massive corruption in PMC functioning, autocratic working by the ruling party at PMC and unfulfilled promises have been sighted as the reasons for the resignation of the 7 PWP corporators from the council. Where on one side the news of the resignation sent shock waves in the political circles, the reports were further fuelled when these corporators joined Ramsheth Thakur led Congress party in this region. In a hurriedly convened press conference, presided over by the PWP PMC spokesperson Sandip Patil and Corporator Shrikanth Thakur, the PWP party refuted the allegations made by the corporators of their own party. The PWP said that the corporators who resigned were already traitors supporting the Congress and were on the verge of being officially expelled from the party. It was this fear that led them to quit the PWP and join Congress they say, making baseless allegations against them. The PWP is demanding that the corporators who have resigned be booked under the new defection law. Meanwhile the strength of the PWP in the Panvel Municipal Council has fallen from 25 to 18 and that of Congress has become 9 from 2. With only 2 months to go for the council’s elections, this controversy is of significance and a trailer of the power demonstration that Vivek Patil led PWP and Ramsheth Thakur led Congress will do in the elections. Reliable sources reveal that there might be more corporators who might leave the PWP and join the Congress soon.
