The first showers always come with respite of bidding farewell to the scorching heat and rejoicing the magical monsoon. But in Navi Mumbai, it’s raining problems ever since monsoon has started. Looks like the NMMC administration once again took the city for a ride as the first monsoon showers have exposed the complete failure of NMMC’s pre monsoon work. A few hours of continuous showers led to water logging in several areas of Vashi and CBD. Rain rain, go away, come here some other day. This is a mantra that Navi Mumbaikars are chanting as this year too despite authorities’ efforts, every fear of Navi Mumbaikars have come true – incomplete pre monsoon has left the city in such dire conditions that a few hours of rains resulted in water logging. The worst affected seemed to be ward no. 83 of Belapur that comprises of Sectors 4 and 5. Within few hours of rain, like every year, the water levels increased so much that it entered the shops. What made the situation dangerous were the open MSEDC cables that were lying around and could prove to be fatal for locals. Frustrated residents accused their local NCP corporator Shaila Nath for disappearing at a time when citizens needed her the most. BJP party worker and social activist C V Reddy said that residents were disappointed that despite big promises and assurances a few hours of rain had left them distraught due to water logging. He said that if two hours could create such havoc, then what would happen on days of heavy rains. He also voiced that there was a need of coordination between NMMC and MSEDC as power cables were lying in the open posing fatal risk to citizens. On the other hand, the same complaints of water logging came from Vashi also. A few hours of rains in Navi Mumbai led to water logging in areas that went up to over a feet causing major inconvenience to locals – exposing the failure of NMMC pre monsoon works. Locals said that all claims made by the NMMC administration on pre monsoon work were farce It may be recalled that the NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata had claimed on May 25th that 75% nullah cleaning work has been done and the rest would be completed by May 31st. However, these claims of the Commissioner were beyond the reality that one saw in a few hours of first showers. The way citizens are suffering due to the failure of pre monsoon work has also exposed that even after Mayor Sagar Naik’s visit; the monsoon has come with hassles making the Mayor’s debut pre monsoon visit meaningless. So if you think this is the worst you have to face, think again – for the monsoons have just begun. With Monika Bhosale, Gangasingh Rajpurohit for NMTV News.
