The plush and lush stretch of mangroves alongside the Kamothe creek at Panvel have been brutally chopped and cut down and construction has been started in its place. And surprisingly, the authorities are sitting as mute spectators to this. The world is waking up to the disasters of global warming and need for greenery but unfortunately in the city, the m threat is yet to be taken cognizance of as still reports of deforestation are heard time and again. One such case is evident in Navi Mumbai at Kamothe creek which used to be a huge stretch of greenery and mangroves. But this stretch is too being suffocated by the clutches of land mafia. The buildings that you see now at Kamothe were earlier marsh lands covered with mangroves. We spoke to environmentalist Renu Roy who told us about the importance of mangroves. Unfortunately all this is happening even after the High Court had passed an order in 2005 that no development work can be carried upto 50 metres of plush mangroves stretch. If the situation persists then it won’t be long when the threats of global warming will actually become a reality for our city.
