The MCGM Standing Committee has given its nod to the ration card proposal of Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak. The proposal was sanctioned despite, massive protests reports Rajeev Mishra. The MCGM Commissioner had brought the proposal of making ration cards compulsory for availing MCGM medical services in the weekly standing committee. The proposal was brought in order to ease the growing burden on civic hospitals in the city. During the discussions on the proposal in the weekly Standing Committee meet, where on one side Congress, NCP and Samajwadi Party protested the proposal, both Shiv Sena and Maharashra Navnirman Sena supported the proposal. MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak assured all that the proposal will not affect the medical services being provided to Mumbaikars at large. The Commissioner further assured that he is going to discuss this proposal with the state government as well. Only after the consent of the state government, will the proposal be implemented. The Commissioner further accepted that the ration card clause in not practiced in any state-run hospital but he will explain the reason why MCGM has brought this proposal. On the other hand MCGM Opposition Leader Rajhans Singh strongly opposed the proposal. Even Samajwadi Party’s State President Abu Asim Azmi opposed the proposal. No matter how much the MCGM administration defends the proposal to make ration cards mandatory for availing their medical services, beyond any doubt it will mean snatching away the constitutional rights of health to citizens of other states who come to Mumbai in their battle for survival. The ball is now in the court of the Congress – NCP run ruling front to decide whether they will go by the vote of their members in MCGM or not.
