DESPITE POLICE CHOWKIES, NAVI MUMBAI PORTS STILL VULNERABLE TO CRIME

samudradal-3The ports of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are the most sensitive prone as smuggling of weapons, bombs, & sometimes even drugs are easy through these points. Although the security has been increased around the ports, shortage of police boats has led the local police to seek help from the Koli community of the area. Security on ports of every city is most imperative as ports are considered to be the most sensitive zones. Same is the case of the ports of Navi Mumbai. It maybe recalled that during the 1993 Mumbai blasts, two accused, Uttam Poddar & Salim Mira Sheikh smuggled weapons & other explosives like RDX from the Dighi and Shekhadi ports in Raigad district. In the case, 4 custom officers namely, RK Singh, Jaywant Gurav, Mohd, Sultan Sayeed, Sudhanwa Talvdekar were found guilty. Apart from this, rocket launchers, live cartridges, pistols and even drugs were also seized from the JNPT port. Keeping in mind the increasing crime near the ports, the Home Ministry directed to have two new police chowkis in the area. The police chowkis were even provided with one boat each. Unfortunately, lack of maintenance of the boats, there are not usable for patrolling and hence, the local police is forced to use the boats of the fishermen. Even the Commissioner of Police Ramrao Wagh accepts the issue of shortage of boats. Sources reveal that the recent Intelligence report highlights terrorist risks near the NRI complex at Nerul but looking at the lack of intense security forces and equipments, safety and security has become a huge concern for the residents of Navi Mumbai.
