The state housing department failed yet again to finalize an appropriate model to redevelop Dharavi even as the clamour for a participatory approach grew louder from the slum town residents. The Principal Secretary of housing after a review meeting with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, that the housing department and SRA needed to study the project in detail before a final decision could be taken. The state government is caught between two models of Dharavi redevelopment. The original concept plan prepared proposes redevelopment by dividing the slum town in five sectors. Not only has the state government backed this plan all along, but it has also footed what critics of this model call an “inflated” consultancy fees. However, the SRA, which is the nodal agency for the Rs 15,000-crore Dharavi Redevelopment Project, has overwhelmingly favoured a 32-sector alternative model suggested by an advisory committee of experts set up by the state government.
