In an indirect rejoinder to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s statement, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane expressed his empathy for those behind the Bharat bandh. State Revenue Minister Narayan Rane has gone on record to say that it is immaterial who organized the nationwide shutdown. What is significant is that people have been groaning under the burden of price rise. Narayan Rane’s remarks are in stark contrast to Ashok Chavan’s statement slamming the Opposition-sponsored Bharat bandh on July 5. Not only had CM Ashok Chavan threatened to move court against the nation-wide strike, he had also described the Monday strike as a damp squib. By opposing Chavan on the bandh, Rane could well be voicing the growing concern in the Congress about the spiralling rise in prices of petroleum products and essential commodities. According to Congress sources, differences between Chavan and Rane on the bandh issue could be embarrassing for the party and the government ahead of the state legislature’s crucial monsoon session.
