The monthly general body meeting of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation of the month and the adjourned meeting of last month was again adjourned without taking up a single subject on the agenda. At the outset, leader of the house Shashikant Birajdar proposed the adjournment on grounds of absence of the Commissioner, which was seconded by Dr. Jayaji Nath. When the NCP proposed adjournment of the meeting, opposition benches voiced disagreement demanding the conduct of the meeting for executing work of the city. Vittal More of Shiv Sena, Anand Kale and Namdev Bhagat of Congress and Bharat Jadhav of BJP condemned the adjournment motion. Bhagat termed it as misuse of power and penalizing people for error of officials. He expressed the need to move to condolence motions for victims of the Malegoan blasts and congratulating motion for the unopposed election of Supriya Sule to the Rajya Sabha. He further pointed out that while at the national level Sharad Pawar garnered support of all parties to get his daughter elected unopposed, the NCP Supremo was not only alienating from other parties but also within his own party. Soon after Congress Corporator D K Jadhav made a passing remark against the officiating Mayor Bharat Nakhate, asking him to wear bangles, which infuriated lady corporators of the ruling party. The ruling benches demanded an apology, which the opposition benches forbid Datta Jadhav to tender. Attempts to silence the corporators failed compelling the presiding Mayor to adjourn the meeting; some of the members continued the argument for a few minutes even as the national anthem was on. The opposition members of Shiv Sena and Congress party condoled the Malegaon blasts and lodged protest against Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik and the NCP members. Sudam Hiwarkar alleged a conspiracy by the municipal administration and NCP leadership to stall work of corporators. He expressed shock at the municipal commissioner Madhukar Kokate handing over charge to NMMT Chief Sanjay Katkar, against whom the very House had moved a no-confidence motion for his involvement in the Asudgaon NMMT depot scam. Opposition leader Dashrath Bhagat called upon the opposition to bring bangles in the next meeting to offer it to the ruling party corporators, as “this is what they deserve”.
