DISASTER MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP BRIEFS ENGINEERS THE TECHNIQUES TO COPE UP WITH DISASTERS

workshop-1A workshop on the theme of disaster management was held at the Engineers Institute at CBD Belapur. In order to create awareness about constructing earthquake resistant buildings in Navi Mumbai, a workshop was held for the engineers of the city. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Engineers, Belapur where many engineers from CIDCO, NMMC and other departments had participated. For building earthquake resistant buildings and other requirements, knowledge and expertise of the technology is very important. The workshop aimed at training the engineers on the same. Present during the workshop NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata gave his views on the need for such workshops. Navi Mumbai lies on the eastern seaboard of the Thane creek and hence is very vulnerable to earthquakes. Therefore, it is important to make buildings that can stand such natural disasters. The President of the Engineering Association of Maharashtra State, Shantilal Jain advocated the use of such techniques. According to him, a structural audit of buildings more than 15 year old should be mandatory. Mohan Dagaonkar, City Engineer of NMMC also the organizer of the workshop stated that these workshops were very important for the builders. Many a times residents carry out interior changes within their apartments which might affect the foundation of the building.
